Are rainwater tanks worth the Money?

Certainly, investing in a water tank is an unequivocal yes. Not only does it lead to financial savings, but it also guarantees a perennially green garden and plays a significant role in environmental stewardship.

Those who opt for a water tank find it to be a fantastic investment, ultimately paying dividends over its entire lifetime.

Some of the benefits to getting a water tank installed can include:

  • saving money on water bills
  • less reliance on mains water supplies
  • catching rainwater so less goes down the drains – this helps to prevent flooding
  • a gorgeously green garden year-round, without worrying about water restrictions

A rainwater tank is an investment so make sure you do some research and planning before you make the leap. For example:

  • Will you be drinking the water? If so, we highly recommend our Stainless Steel Water Tanks as they provide cleaner water. Stainless Steel is the choice of Australia’s world class food processing, catering, and medical industries as it is an inert material that is easy to clean and maintain. Stainless Steel will not taint the taste of your water nor leach any foreign chemicals.
  • What’s your budget, and how flexible is that figure? Cheaper water tanks are made of materials that degrade faster, so spending a little more can be an investment over the years.
  • Is recyclability a priority? Steel tanks are usually fully recyclable, whereas poly (plastic) tanks often degrade into a condition where they have little recycling value.
  • Round or slimline water tank? Slimline water tanks are becoming increasingly popular for their more aesthetic look; they can fit alongside  your property. Round water tanks have the classic, traditional look, and with the right coat of paint or a cool mural, they can be a real backyard feature).
Are stainless steel water tanks better?

Stainless steel water tanks have several advantages that make them a popular choice in certain applications. Here are some reasons why stainless steel water tanks are considered better in certain situations:

Beautiful Stainless Steel is a favorited material of architects and designers of beautiful homes. Your Stainless Steel tank will maintain its appearance for its natural life.

Cost Effective Over its life cycle, a Stainless Steel water tank with it’s 30 year warranty will ultimately be very cost-effective.

Fire Resistant Scientists have found that stainless steel water tanks maintain their structural integrity and have only minor water loss when exposed to bushfires. We can fit our tanks with fire-fighting compliant fittings to meet local Council requirements.

Durability: Stainless steel is highly durable and resistant to corrosion, which makes it ideal for long-term water storage. It can withstand various weather conditions and is less likely to deteriorate over time compared to other materials like plastic or concrete.

Hygiene: Stainless steel is a non-porous material, which means it does not harbor bacteria, mold, or algae growth. This makes it easier to maintain good water quality and reduces the risk of contamination. Additionally, stainless steel tanks are usually welded and have smooth interiors, eliminating potential crevices where bacteria could accumulate.

Chemical resistance: Stainless steel is resistant to chemicals, including those found in water treatments such as chlorine. This resistance ensures that the water stored in the tank remains free from chemical reactions or contamination that could occur with other tank materials.

Strength: Stainless steel has high tensile strength, making it less prone to structural failures or leaks. It can withstand high pressure and is suitable for storing large volumes of water, which is particularly important in industrial or commercial applications.

Longevity: A Select Stainless Steel water tank has a minimum life of 30 years. The corrosion resistance properties of Stainless Steel means the tank will not only last for a long time but it will always look brand new.

Fully Recyclable Our stainless steel tanks have no plastic and they create a low carbon emission footprint in production. They are fully recyclable. The main mineral elements of stainless steel are highly valuable and can be easily recovered and re-used.

What Grade Stainless Steel is best for Water Tank?

The best grade of stainless steel for a water tank depends on the specific requirements of the application. However, based on the information provided, here is a summary:

304 Grade Stainless Steel Tanks: Grade 304 stainless steel is commonly used for water tanks. It has a high nickel content (8-10.5%) and chromium content (18-20%), along with other alloying elements. Grade 304 offers good corrosion resistance and is suitable for most freshwater storage applications. It is easy to clean and maintain a hygienic surface, making it a popular choice for various purposes.

316 Grade Stainless Steel Tanks: Grade 316 stainless steel is an alloy that contains elements like chromium, nickel, molybdenum, and others. It offers enhanced corrosion resistance compared to 304 stainless steel. Grade 316 is particularly suitable for water tanks in sea-side environments due to its resistance against rust and a wide range of organic and inorganic chemicals.

Inland areas away from corrosive sea environments generally utilize 304 grade stainless steel tanks, while coastal or marine areas may benefit from the added corrosion resistance of 316 grade stainless steel tanks. Regular rinsing with rainwater can help maintain the passive film on 316 stainless steel tanks.

Ultimately, the choice between 304 and 316 grade stainless steel depends on factors such as the water conditions, location, budget, and the desired level of corrosion resistance. Consulting with experts or professionals familiar with local regulations can help determine the most suitable grade for your specific water tank application.

What are the delivery costs?

Our Office Manager will discuss with you the cost of delivery. The delivery cost is primarily based on the distance from our factory south of Brisbane to your site. Other factors which may need to be taken into consideration for example, are the size of the load and the difficulty of access to your site.

What Size Water Tank Do I need?

Determining the size of the water tank you need depends on various factors, including your water usage requirements. Here are some key points from the provided content to help you understand what size water tank you might need:

Assess your water needs: Consider both indoor and outdoor water usage. Determine the total liters of water you require per day and per month for activities such as garden watering, toilet flushing, laundry, car washing, etc.

Recommended tank size: It is generally suggested to choose a tank size that can hold approximately three times the total liters of water you need per month. If your total exceeds 30,000 liters, you may consider linking multiple tanks together.

Water tank dimensions and types: Depending on available space and preferences, you can select either round or slimline water tanks. Round water tanks are common in regional areas, while slimline tanks are suitable for urban settings with limited space.

Slimline water tanks: These tanks are ideal for areas with space constraints. The maximum water storage for a single slimline water tank is typically 8,500 liters. However, you can increase storage capacity by connecting multiple tanks side by side.

Round water tanks: Round tanks can store up to 30,000 liters of water. They are suitable for locations with ample space and when a large volume of water is desired.

Consider multiple tanks: If possible, installing several smaller tanks instead of one large tank can provide advantages. Smaller tanks are easier to transport and can be placed in different locations to capture rainwater from multiple roof aspects.

Remember, these suggestions provide a general guideline. It is essential to assess your specific water needs, available space, and consult with professionals or suppliers to determine the most appropriate size and type of water tank for your situation.

Does Stainless Steel Cost More?

On average, round stainless steel tanks made from Premium grade 304 stainless steel are approximately $500 to $1000 more than the equivalent tanks made from Aquaplate/Colorbond.

For example, a 10,000 litre round tank made from stainless steel is approximately $1600 whereas a similar one made from Aquaplate/Colorbond is approximately $1000.

The price differential is slightly more for slimline tanks because of the inclusion of internal stainless-steel rods to strengthen the slimline shape of the tanks.

The price differential is also greater if Marine grade 316 stainless steel is used to construct the tanks.
